Creating positive impact through businessInterested in creating positive impact through business?

Perhaps you are a sceptic? As someone recently said to me “no business makes a decision to be inherently ‘bad’.”

And yet, there are so many decisions that can be made by a business every day that can have a positive or detrimental impact on society and on our planet. From where and how we source our goods and services to our profit structure and commitment to corporate social responsibility.

I believe in the power of business to create positive change and impact in the world.

When we think of the many challenges we face, it can feel… disheartening.

So, how we can make a difference and leave a positive legacy?

What are the ways in which our work can be a force for good?

One of the most exciting things about business is that it provides a platform to solve problems and create innovative solutions that can make a real difference.

Whether you’re running a small startup, a team member in a bigger organisation or leading a global corporation, there are countless opportunities to make a positive impact in the world.

In my own experience and career, I’ve seen how businesses and organisations can drive positive change in many ways, from

  • championing sustainability and reducing carbon footprints,
  • being advocates for important campaigns,
  • improving accessibility through better design to
  • creating products and services that help people live healthier, happier lives with less impact on our environment.

Even simply by making a commitment to contribute to the UN Sustainable Development goals, businesses can not only help create a better world, but also live their vision, mission and values.

Of course, creating positive change through business isn’t always easy.

It requires a lot of hard work, dedication, and sometimes even taking risks.

But the rewards can be enormous, not just for the business itself, but for the wider community and the planet as a whole.

Many of you know the countless hours I’ve spent in our marine environment, on and under the water plus championing it through advocacy and conversation.

Business drives so much of the conversation. It can be such an integral part of the dialogue and the solution.

So, as we head into another day, let’s remember the incredible potential each of us has to create positive change and impact. Whether it’s Kaizen (small, good change) or massive disruption (the song “From little things big things grow” by Paul Kelly comes to mind). Whether you’re an entrepreneur, a business leader, or simply someone who cares about making a difference, there’s always something you can do to help build a better world through your work.

On a personal note, it’s been an absolute privilege to work with so many brilliant changemakers in the not for profit and for profit sectors – including, of course social enterprise. Thank you for all you do to create positive change.

I’d love to hear some inspiring stories, please share any that you have come across that you think deserve a shout-out!
